4-H Club awards scholarship

The Annual Mitchell May Memorial Scholarship was presented to Carlton Lynn on September 28, 2017 at the annual 4-H Awards Banquet. Eleventh and twelfth grade members of the Decatur County 4-H Shotgun team wishing to further their education at the college level are eligible to apply for the $500 scholarship that is given in the memory of University of Georgia County Extension Agent Mitchell May. May, who passed away in July 2013, was one of the founding coaches of the Decatur County 4-H shotgun team. He spent many hours ensuring that youth had the training, skills and role models necessary to become successful citizens and leaders.
The award selection process for the Mitchell May Memorial Scholarship is based on the applicant’s community involvement, program involvement, and extracurricular activities. Additionally, applicants are required to submit a two-page essay relating to the topic; “What positive character traits do you feel that you developed as a result of participation in extracurricular activities such as 4-H and the shotgun team.” In his essay, Lynn stated that, “I owe 4-H for giving me skills like organization, responsibility, and hard work and the list continues. 4-H isn’t just about raising an animal or participating on the shotgun team; there are so many other projects to do.”
Barbara May, wife of Mitchell May, presented the Scholarship to Carlton Lynn, son of Turner and Susan Lynn. As a 12th grade student at Bainbridge High School, Lynn has participated on the Decatur County 4-H Shotgun Team for many years and as an avid Decatur County 4-H member for eight years. Additionally, Lynn is a member of FFA, Interact Club, and is also a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
At the 4-H Awards Banquet, Lindsey B. Hayes, Decatur County 4-H Agent, stated, “Carlton exemplifies the qualities of integrity and responsibility, all while having a strong work ethic. Carlton is a team player not only for the Decatur County 4-H Shotgun Team but the 4-H program.”
