Hugh Dorsey Howell was born March 23, 1927 in Adel, GA, the son of Glen McAfee Howell and Maude Crosby Howell. He was a member of Bainbridge Church of God and retired from Georgia Industries for the Blind.

Hugh Dorsey Howell was a man who truly loved God and devoted most of his life to playing the piano and singing about his love for Him anywhere he was called. He was a resident at Bainbridge Memorial Manor where he continued playing and singing when he could. When he could no longer play, he wanted to be close to whoever else played songs about the God he so dearly loved. He loved going to church and was a long-time member of Bainbridge Church of God. He loved and prayed for his church family often. He attended Georgia Academy for the Blind but began working at Georgia Industries for the Blind in 1950. He also worked with the Co-Op for the Blind vending stand program at such places as Dickies, Jack Winter and Bainbridge State College.

Survivors include his children, Hugh D. Howell, Jr. of Bainbridge, Donna H. Maloy and her husband, Chuck, of Climax, and Theresa Ritter and her husband, Danny, also of Bainbridge; his grandchildren, Ryan & Marissa Maloy, Lacey & Levi Crawford, Autumn Howell and Christina Ritter; his great-grandchildren, Annaca Maloy, Layden Crawford and Lincoln Crawford; the mother of his children, Lalla Cloud; and several nieces and nephews. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Helen H. Howell; and his siblings, Effie Lassiter, Lucille Cowart, Ethel Lassiter, Glen Howell and his twin, Dorothy Lindsey.
The Howell Family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Sydney Cochran and his staff, Memorial Manor and Kindred Hospice.

One Comment on “Hugh Dorsey Howell, Sr.”

  1. Dorsey was an inspiration to all who knew him. Smart, friendly, hard working, it was my pleasure to work with him for many years at GIB, “ The Blind Factory”. Dorsey was one of the few totally blind that I have known who had “foresight”, that is the enhanced development of other senses, such as sounds, wind or breeze on skin, foot step noise, etc., to know where he was when in familiar territory. It was amazing to see him walking full speed down the loading dock with no sweeping cane or escort. When I asked him where he was he knew exactly and would ask me if I was lost? Dorsey was a good guy!
