At 2:45am on Thursday, July 5th, Officer Leroy Akins performed a routine traffic stop on a vehicle traveling on Calhoun Street near Stones Home Center. Akins approached the driver and immediately noticed that he seemed extremely anxious. Akins asked the driver why he was nervous and if he had anything illegal inside of the vehicle. The driver stated he wasn’t in possession of anything illegal, but he continued to act in a suspicious manner. Officer Akins was then joined by Officer Jayson Myers and K9 Kenzo. Myers deployed K9 Kenzo to conduct an exterior sniff of the vehicle. K9 Kenzo alerted Myers to the scent of illegal drugs. Myers conducted a search of the interior of the vehicle, and located a baggie containing a crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine. Myers also located a used syringe and a loaded .32 caliber revolver in a holster. Akins and Myers ran the tag and license and found that the driver, Bradley Seth Powell, was a convicted felon. Powell, of an East River Road address, was arrested and charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon (Felony), Possession of a Controlled Substance – Methamphetamine (Felony), and Tail Light and Tag Light Requirements.
