Vernon owned and operated Smith Insulation & Pest Control until his retirement. He then went to work at Sammy’s Bait and Tackle to support his fishing habit. Vernon was Baptist by faith.

Mr. Vernon enjoyed anything outdoors but especially fishing with Leslie Ann. His motto for hunting and fishing included cooking what you killed or caught. He had a dry sense of humor but was always willing to share a story or a chuckle. In his heyday Mr. Vernon was active in the Jaycees, Home Builders Association, Bainbridge Bass Club and the Sheriff’s Rescue Unit.

Survivors include his daughter, Debbie Smith of Bainbridge; his siblings, Evelyn Smith Cox and her husband, Paul, of Oglethorpe, GA, Dale Garrett and her husband, Allen, of Warner Robins, GA, and Donald Hugh Smith of Lagrange, GA; and his grandchildren, Jared Smith, Leslie Ann Newberry and Elizabeth Newberry Scott. In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Carolyn A. Smith; his son, Dan Smith; an infant brother; and his step-father, Horace Bartlett.
